Staying safe while finding a room
Protect your money, privacy and pets when exploring shared accommodation.
Before you use this guide
These are general household conversation starters, not a legal approval or tenancy agreement. Confirm local laws and the particular property's rules independently.
Verify the room and the person offering it
- Inspect the property or arrange a trusted independent inspection before paying or committing.
- Check that the advertiser is authorised to offer the room and that the written terms match what was advertised.
- Keep a record of the agreed price, bond, bills, moving date and any pet restrictions.
Protect personal information
- Be cautious with identity documents, bank details and exact addresses. Share only what is needed at the appropriate stage.
- Never send money to obtain priority access to a listing or to āreserveā a room you cannot verify.
- Watch for pressure to move the conversation to unusual payment platforms or to pay urgently without clear documentation.
Be specific about pet consent
- A host saying āpets welcomeā is not proof of landlord or owners corporation permission.
- Ask about the type, size and number of animals permitted, indoor access, fencing and existing household pets.
- Do not treat a pet-friendly listing as a promise that every pet or person will be compatible.
If something feels wrong
Stop the transaction, save any relevant messages and contact your state tenancy authority or consumer protection agency for advice. If you believe anyone is in immediate danger, contact the appropriate emergency service.
BringYaPet is still preparing its listings and reporting processes. The information here is general safety guidance, not legal advice.
