Introducing pets to a new share house

Give people and animals a careful transition rather than assuming everyone will get along instantly.

Before you use this guide

These are general household conversation starters, not a legal approval or tenancy agreement. Confirm local laws and the particular property's rules independently.

Before moving day

  • Ask current housemates about each resident animal’s behaviour, routines and response to unfamiliar pets.
  • Discuss separate rooms, secure gates and how you will prevent accidental encounters at doors.
  • Make sure both households agree on the plan and that permission for the incoming animal is confirmed.

Start with distance and choice

A new home can be stressful for an animal. Set up a quiet, secure space and give them time to get familiar with the environment.

Introductions should be gradual and supervised. Avoid forcing animals into close contact, and do not leave unfamiliar pets together unsupervised until the people responsible have good reason to believe the arrangement is safe.

Watch what the household needs

  • Agree on feeding areas and how food, toys and resting places will be managed.
  • Take individual comfort levels seriously. A resident animal may need extra time, or the pairing may not be suitable.
  • Discuss sound, cleanliness and shared space expectations with the people living there, not only the owners.

Know when to ask for help

If an animal shows persistent distress, threatening behaviour or unsafe reactions, pause the introduction and seek advice from a qualified veterinarian or animal behaviour professional.

The right rental on paper is not automatically the right animal pairing. A willingness to reconsider the arrangement is part of responsible pet ownership.
