Renting with pets in Australia
Who needs to agree before a pet moves into a shared home.
Before you use this guide
These are general household conversation starters, not a legal approval or tenancy agreement. Confirm local laws and the particular property's rules independently.
Rules depend on your state or territory
Tenancy law is set by each state and territory, and several have changed their rules about pets in rentals in recent years. Check the current rules with your stateโs tenancy or consumer affairs body before you commit.
In a share house, ask the right person
- If the person you will live with is the head tenant, they usually need permission from the landlord or agent before another pet moves in.
- If you will be on the lease, you will need to make the request yourself, usually in writing.
- If the property is in a strata scheme, the owners corporation may have its own pet rules.
- If the host owns the home, check any mortgage, body corporate or insurance conditions that apply.
Get it in writing
- Keep the approval message or letter and note any conditions, such as the number of animals.
- Agree who is responsible for damage, cleaning and noise before the pet arrives.
- Put the household rules in a written housemate agreement.
Before you move in
- Check your pet is registered with the local council and microchipped, as required in your area.
- Ask about fencing, indoor access and any size or breed limits.
- Arrange an introduction with any pets already living there.
