Hosting pets in your home
Decide your pet rules before you list a room so the right people reply.
Before you use this guide
These are general household conversation starters, not a legal approval or tenancy agreement. Confirm local laws and the particular property's rules independently.
Start with permission
Only advertise a room you have authority to offer. Check your lease, landlord or agent, owners corporation and insurance before saying a new pet is welcome.
Describe your household honestly
- List the pets already living in the home, including temperament and any needs.
- State which new pets you would accept, how many, and any size limit.
- Say whether animals may live indoors and whether the yard is securely fenced.
Meet before you agree
- Arrange a meeting between the animals before anyone commits.
- Ask for vaccination, microchip and registration details.
- Agree how food, vet costs, damage and holiday care are handled.
Keep it safe
- Never ask for money before the person has inspected the room.
- Use the housemate agreement guide to put expectations in writing.
